School swimming is an important part of school education — it gives pupils the chance to learn a life-saving skill while promoting good health and physical activity. Swimming engages the whole body and helps develop strength, endurance, coordination and balance, making it one of the best ways to train.
Learning to swim builds skills that stay useful for life, both in leisure and in emergencies. Swimming is one of the few activities that can save a life when drowning is a risk, which makes the skill deeply important.
Beyond health and safety benefits, school swimming strengthens community and cooperation between pupils. It creates room for new friendships and social skills, and can break down barriers between children with different physical abilities and challenges.
